As a sergeant in the New York Police Department, I am deeply concerned about the current pay structure that allows top pay police officers to earn more than their supervising sergeants. This issue affects all sergeants and our families. We are responsible for leading and managing these officers, yet we receive less compensation for our efforts.

This is not just an individual concern; it's a matter of fairness and respect within our ranks. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, police supervisors across the nation typically earn 33% more than their subordinates (Bureau of Labor Statistics). However, in New York City, this standard is not being met.

Our union members have voiced that they value fair salaries over extended work hours at this particular point in time. It's time we address this disparity to ensure that those who take on additional responsibilities are adequately compensated.
