Increase safety on the University of Washington campus

Increase safety on the University of Washington campus
The Issue
In the heart of University District, where the community of the University of Washington (UW) resides, the safety of students is at an alarming risk. The U-District area surrounding our campus has become synonymous with crime, including drug abuse, assault, and more seriously, murder. Recently, our community was shaken by the tragic homicide of a fellow UW student, leaving us all engulfed in fear and uncertainty. This event is not isolated but rather indicative of a disturbing pattern affecting the peace and security of UW students daily.
With crime rates escalating at an alarming pace in the U-district, the anxiety among students and their families has reached new heights. This fear is justified by statistics showing a significant uptick in crime over recent years, backed by reports from the Seattle Police Department and UW Campus Safety Statistics, which highlight a concerning trend of violent crimes occurring in close proximity to the campus.
To address this urgent matter, we are calling on university administration and city officials to implement comprehensive safety measures that will ensure the well-being of all students. This includes increasing the presence and response of campus security and law enforcement in the area, installing additional lighting to deter criminal activity, enhancing surveillance through more cameras, ensuring proactiveness among safety officials to investigate crime reports, and organizing community safety workshops to educate students about personal safety practices. We also urge the collaboration of UW with local law enforcement to establish a more effective rapid response system dedicated to responding to reports of crime in and around campus.
Moreover, we believe in fostering a community approach to safety by encouraging student and resident participation in neighborhood watch programs. Engagement with local businesses to create a safer environment around our campus could also be transformative. By collectively taking these steps, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all UW students, ensuring that education remains the focus rather than fear.
Join us in demanding immediate action to protect the University of Washington community. Please sign this petition to support enhanced safety measures, ensuring that the U-District becomes a safe haven rather than a hazardous zone for students and residents alike.
