Increase Safety Measures in Newark and Licking County Schools

Increase Safety Measures in Newark and Licking County Schools
The Issue
As parents and community members, we are deeply concerned about the safety of our children in Newark City Schools and across Licking County. We love the schools our children attend, and we are grateful for the dedication and care shown by their teachers and staff. However, empathy and compassion alone are not enough when it comes to protecting our children’s lives.
We respectfully request that an officer, school resource officer, or qualified retired officer be present daily at every elementary and middle school in the district, as is already the case at the high school level. In addition, schools should require identification and a stated purpose for visiting before granting entry. Currently, visitors are often buzzed in without being asked any questions, which leaves a serious gap in security. If staffing shortages or funding are concerns, we urge consideration of retired officers or trained volunteers who could serve in these roles at a reduced cost without pulling active-duty officers away from patrols.
Our children’s safety must be the top priority. A consistent protective presence in schools, paired with stricter entry protocols, would not only serve as a deterrent but also provide reassurance for students, staff, and families. We call on the Newark Police Department, school board, and local leaders to work together to make this a reality.
