Increase Safety Measures at Achievement First Amistad High School

Increase Safety Measures at Achievement First Amistad High School
The Issue
I was in my English classroom being held in a lock-in. I didn’t know why and just thought it was like a practice or, you know, not a useful one. Then 3 hours pass by and people are saying that a weapon has been threatened to be used inside the building. We are then told to leave the building and take the bus home. We didn’t know someone was about to use a weapon on the school, imagine how unsafe this building is.
This frightening experience underscored the urgent need for enhanced security measures at Achievement First Amistad High School in New Haven, CT. Safety is not something that can be taken lightly. Schools should be sanctuaries for learning, growth, and development—not places where students and staff feel threatened.
We are calling on the school administration and the local education authorities to take immediate action. First, conduct a thorough review of the existing safety procedures and identify any gaps or weaknesses. Second, install an advanced entry and surveillance system, which could include metal detectors, increased security personnel, and updated emergency response strategies.
Furthermore, regular safety drills and emergency preparedness workshops should be integrated into the school curriculum. Students and teachers need to be informed and prepared for any potential threats. Education on recognizing warning signs of violence and effective communication during crises is paramount. The amount of drugs being used in this building is a high amount! This school either needs more security and safety or needs to be shut down if needed!
It's time to act decisively to ensure the safety of all individuals within Achievement First Amistad High School. Let's prevent any future incidents from occurring by taking proactive measures today. Join us in advocating for a secure learning environment by signing this petition.
