The Issue

Having personally experienced the system at Waiawa Correctional Facility, I've witnessed how individuals striving to rehabilitate themselves can find their efforts stall due to a lack of available programs. While people follow the rules and participate in the required classes, missing the program enrollment list could mean waiting another three to six months, drastically prolonging their path to reintegration with society and reuniting with their families.

The reality is that rehabilitation should be an integral part of the correctional process, offering a genuine opportunity for individuals to succeed. Without adequate access to these essential programs, we are not just delaying their progress; we are also impeding their potential to make positive contributions to society upon release.

Rehabilitation classes 2.0 and 2.5 at Waiawa are critical components of this transformative process, yet their scarcity means that even the most motivated individuals can find themselves languishing in limbo. When people are held back simply due to a lack of seats in crucial classes, it undermines the primary goal of rehabilitation.

The solution is clear: increase the number of rehabilitation classes and seats available, ensuring that all who are eligible and eager can enroll in classes like 2.0 and 2.5 when they need them. This will not only accelerate their personal development but will also benefit the greater community by reducing recidivism and fostering a more constructive environment within the facility.

Everyone deserves the chance to change and improve their lives, particularly those who have shown commitment to turning their lives around. By providing enough opportunities for education and rehabilitation, Waiawa Correctional Facility can fulfill its promise of truly rehabilitating its residents.

I urge the Department of Public Safety and prison administration at Waiawa to take immediate action to expand these programs. Doing so will demonstrate a true commitment to rehabilitation, enabling individuals to succeed and reintegrate into society effectively.

Please sign this petition to advocate for more rehabilitation classes at Waiawa Correctional Facility, so that everyone who wants to can complete their programs successfully and return home to their loved ones with renewed purpose.
