Increase OSAP funding for post-secondary students

The Issue

I am a Grade 11 student with a passion for sports medicine and a dream to become a physiotherapist. The pathway to achieving this dream requires many years of post-secondary education, and with it comes a significant financial burden. The skyrocketing costs of tuition and living expenses are daunting, and the prospect of being saddled with overwhelming debt is a looming reality for many students like me.

In Ontario, Canada, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is designed to help alleviate some of this financial strain. However, the current level of support is simply inadequate. In recent years, major funding cuts shifted OSAP from being largely grant-based to primarily loan-based — dropping from about 85% grants to roughly 25%, while loans increased to about 75% of funding. This dramatic change means students are now forced to borrow far more than before, just to afford the same education. At the same time, tuition fees and living costs continue to rise. A stronger, more comprehensive OSAP funding system is crucial to ensure that the pursuit of education is not synonymous with decades of financial stress.

The situation in Canada is becoming alarmingly similar to the student debt crisis in the United States, where graduates are often left paying off student loans well into their 30s or even 40s. This financial burden can delay important life milestones such as buying a house, getting married, or starting a family. These are not just statistics; they are real-life consequences that affect real people.

Moreover, education should be a right, not a privilege. Every student should have the opportunity to pursue their career goals without the fear of insurmountable debt. By increasing OSAP funding, we can prevent future generations from the shackles of financial uncertainty and make education accessible to all, regardless of their financial background.

Join me in urging the Ontario government to take action. We call for an increase in OSAP funding to adequately support students in their educational endeavours.
