Increase mental health outreach by placing 988 signs in Washington, MO parks and bridge
The Issue
Within the United States, suicide is an ongoing and developing issue due to lack of mental health and preventative resources. This year at the Washington river front, there have been 3 suicides in 2 months and 2 of those were within the last day.
Suicide not only affects adults, but also our youth. In a 2022 survey, within Franklin county schools, (students 6th-12th grade) out of 2,396 students 14.1% reported they considered suicide, 10.6% planned suicide, and 5.7% attempted suicide (dmh.org).
We are petitioning that the National suicide hotline- 988- signs be placed within Washington parks and on the Washington bridge; in hopes, of reaching people in times where having a reminder that help is out there may save their life.
