There is a physical petition circulating in Douglas County that requires your in-person, physical signature to be put on the ballot for voters.

If enough signatures are gathered on that paper petition, it will allow voters to decide in November whether the Douglas County Board of Commissioners should be expanded to 5 members and  how those members should be elected. 

The deadline for signatures is July 9th so please find a signing event and sign as soon as possible. Please sign the petition in person, and invite your neighbors and family members who are registered voters in Douglas County to do the same!

2025 POST: Douglas County, Colorado, is growing and evolving at a rapid pace, and with that growth comes the need for better governance and representation. Currently, our Board of County Commissioners consists of only three members who are elected at large, which limits diverse representation and the ability for all voices in our community to be heard. To facilitate greater input and ensure fairer representation, it's time to increase the number of Commissioners to five and elect them by district.

The current model of three at-large Commissioners does not adequately represent the diverse interests and needs of our county's residents. As an area that encompasses a wide range of communities with distinct characteristics, it's crucial that each district has a dedicated representative on the board. By increasing the number of Commissioners to five, each district within Douglas County would have its own elected Commissioner, ensuring that every community has a voice in the county's decision-making process.

Neighboring counties with district-based representation have shown significant improvements in governance, responsiveness, and overall satisfaction among residents. By adopting this structure, Douglas County can benefit from more localized governance, with Commissioners who are closely connected to their constituent’s unique issues and needs.

Critics might argue that expanding the board could lead to increased costs or bureaucratic inefficiencies. However, the long-term benefits of more equitable and representative governance far outweigh these concerns. With each Commissioner representing a smaller, more manageable constituency, issues can be addressed more efficiently and resolutions implemented more effectively.

Increasing the number of Commissioners also encourages a wider array of candidates to run for office, reflecting a broader spectrum of perspectives and solutions. This diversity in leadership is essential for tackling the challenges of our rapidly growing community in innovative and inclusive ways.
