Indigenous youth accounted for one-half (50%) of youth admissions to custody in 2020/2021, while representing about 8% of the youth population. This stark overrepresentation is a clear indication that systemic changes are urgently needed. Increasing the budget allocation towards programs and initiatives aimed at decreasing this disparity is essential for creating a fairer and more just society. By investing in community-based support, education, and rehabilitation programs specifically designed for Indigenous youth, we can address the root causes of this issue and provide these young individuals with better opportunities for their future. Specifically, money should go towards the Youth Justice Services Funding Program, the Youth Justice Fund, the Indigenous Courtwork Program, and the Indigenous Justice Program.
