Increase break time between classes to at least 5 minutes
The Issue
As a middle school student I am writing this to highlight the struggle that many of us face every day. Teachers have unrealistic expectations that students can transition from one side of the school to the other without overcrowding, get accurate supplies from our lockers (because now we aren't allowed to carry our backpacks into the classroom), and have time to go to bathroom in between all that hustling. This timeline needs to be reevaluated because only 3 minutes is not enough.
our fast-paced school life, every minute counts. Yet, with mere 3-minute breaks between classes, students like me are consistently struggling to attend to basic needs. Whether it's using the restroom, grabbing essential supplies from our lockers, or taking a moment to breathe and mentally prepare for the next lesson, these brief intervals simply aren't enough.
A 5-minute break might not seem like a substantial change, but it could drastically improve the well-being and academic performance of students. Numerous reports indicate that short breaks can significantly enhance students' focus and productivity. According to research published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, scheduled breaks between classes contribute to improved attention spans and fewer classroom disruptions.
Currently, the scant 3-minute breaks rush students into hasty transitions, often leading to overcrowded hallways and hurried bathroom trips. This can breed unnecessary stress and anxiety, potentially affecting students’ mental health and academic focus.
Increasing the break time to at least 5 minutes will not only allow us more time to fulfill essential needs but also help reduce congestion and improve safety in hallways. Simple adjustments can foster a more conducive learning environment where both students and teachers benefit from smoother transitions.
We urge the school administration and district officials to consider this change and prioritize student well-being and academic success. By signing this petition, you will help us advocate for a necessary and reasonable adjustment in our school schedule that actively supports students' health and educational outcomes.
Please join us in making this small but important change. Sign the petition to extend our break time to at least 5 minutes.
