Increase arts funding in the City of Windsor
The Issue
Did you know? Windsor spends the least per capita on arts and culture than any other Canadian city polled in a recent report.
The 2021 Report from the Municipal Benchmarking Network Canada surveyed twelve cities across the country, and Windsor ranked the lowest across all three categories related to arts and culture: Culture Grants per Capita; Culture Operating Cost to Manage Grants per Capita; and Culture Total Cost per Capita.
A Windsor Star article from 2016 addressed the same issue, citing an earlier report from the same organization, which shows that this has been a well-publicized, and persistent issue that our city has done little to remedy.
That same article quoted a local writer who said “While it’s somewhat distressing that Windsor continues to be at the bottom of the arts funding lists, it does point to a tremendous opportunity for improvement…”
That was almost 7 years ago… No doubt, steps have been taken in the right direction, but this most recent report is a stark reminder that we’re still not doing enough, and we’re rapidly falling behind other Canadian cities.
Our goal with this petition is to help illustrate the need for additional arts funding in Windsor. We hope that all Windsor artists and supporters will come together to help demonstrate the impact that a lack of funding has on our local arts community.
The City of Windsor's budget meeting is on April 3, 2023, so we must act now! We encourage you to leave a comment about why the arts are important to you, what it would mean for our City to invest in additional arts funding, or how this increase would not only benefit artists, but also our local tourism industry.
Thank you for your support,
