The Issue

As Pashto-speaking Afghan families living in Melbourne, Victoria, we have experienced the struggle of navigating essential public services without language support in our native tongue. Many of us face challenges in understanding health, school, and community information, as Pashto translations and interpreters are rarely available. This significant gap in language support creates barriers for thousands of Pashto-speaking families who have resettled in Victoria with hopes of rebuilding their lives and contributing to society.

While many public services — including health facilities, educational institutions, community centres, refugee support providers such as AMES Australia and South East Community Links, and local councils — claim to offer multilingual support, Pashto is almost never included. This omission leaves our community at a disadvantage, unable to access essential information or services effectively. The problem is widespread and perpetuates a cycle of exclusion that affects all aspects of our lives, from healthcare decisions to educational opportunities for children.

Statistics show that there are thousands of Pashto speakers in Victoria, many of whom are refugees and new migrants. Yet, despite this significant presence, government initiatives on multilingual support often overlook our needs. For a truly inclusive and multicultural society, it is essential that language services reflect the diversity of the community.

We request that the Victorian Government take immediate action to include Pashto among the languages for public service translations, interpreters, brochures, and informational materials. By doing so, the government will ensure that all Pashto-speaking families, regardless of language background, can equitably access vital services and fully participate in community life.

We urge the Victorian Government to implement comprehensive language support that includes Pashto, so that this gap can be bridged and our community empowered. Sign this petition to make a real difference in the lives of thousands of Pashto-speaking families in Victoria. Your support is invaluable and will help pave the way toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
