Include misogynist speech as hate speech in Australian law
The issue
The rise of online misogyny and the pervasive vilification of women is creating real world harm for Australian women across ages and occupations. From damaging online spaces to threatening the livelihoods and safety of women, misogynistic speech is a scourge that must be addressed under federal and state anti-discrimination laws. It is perplexing that in Australia, where laws protect against racial and homophobic vilification, there remains a glaring gap when it comes to gendered vilification.
Misogynistic speech, both online and offline, is normalising the unequal treatment of women, discouraging them from participating in public life, and increasing their exposure to threats and acts of violence. According to a report by Plan International and the University of Western Sydney, over half of young Australian women have experienced online abuse or harassment, a grim statistic that highlights a systemic issue that needs urgent addressing by the law.
By not classifying misogynistic speech as hate speech, we are implicitly condoning this behavior, sending a message that gender-based discrimination is somehow more acceptable. This is creating an environment where women are made to feel unsafe, silenced, and sidelined, impacting everything from their careers to their personal well-being.
Adding "misogynist speech" under hate speech regulations would strengthen anti-discrimination policies and offer the protection women deserve. It is a chance for Australia to lead by example, showing the world that gender equality is a priority and that discriminatory speech has no place in a fair society.
The change must start with our government reassessing and amending both federal and state anti-discrimination laws to include misogynist speech as hate speech. By doing so, Australia would not only set a precedent but ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for all women.
I call upon the Australian Government to listen, act, and make this vital legal change. Let us safeguard the rights and dignity of women across our nation. Please sign this petition to demand immediate legislative action.
