The Issue

I was never told that HSV1 or HSV2 aren't part of routine STD testing. I had to figure it out on my own to protect myself. Like so many others, I assumed I was being fully tested and protected. All while trying to be safe, I was still affected by HSV. Finding out, I was shocked, confused, and hurt. Not just by the diagnosis, but by the silence surrounding it. No one warned me. No doctor ever offered to test me willingly. I had to protect myself and still ended up hurt. This and people around me made me feel isolated, ashamed, and invisible.

But I’m not alone. Millions of people are living with HSV and don’t even know it, unknowingly passing it on or suffering in silence. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-1 infection globally, and estimates suggest that 491 million people aged 15–49 (13%) worldwide have HSV-2 infection. Despite being so prevalent, routine STD tests don't cover HSV-1 or HSV-2 unless specifically requested. This creates a dangerous gap in sexual health awareness and protection.

The lack of routine screening not only contributes to the silent spread of herpes but also perpetuates the stigma and misinformation surrounding it. Many people mistakenly believe they are free of STDs, while herpes remains undetected. Imagine the impact of including HSV-1 and HSV-2 in routine STD tests: fewer cases would go unnoticed, fewer potential outbreaks, and less stigma.

It's time to change the policy on STD testing. Including HSV1/2 in routine screenings is a concrete step toward stopping the silent spread of this common virus. Urge health authorities, clinics, and healthcare providers to update their STD testing protocols now. Let's ensure everyone has the knowledge and ability to take control of their sexual health.

Please sign this petition to include HSV-1 and HSV-2 in routine STD tests and help end the silent spread of herpes.
