Include dentistry in the Covid-19 Inquiry!
The Issue
Should dentistry be a key focus of healthcare services in the COVID inquiry, which is to examine the healthcare consequences of how the governments responded to the pandemic? Sign our petition to show your support!!
The Chair of the COVID Inquiry said in a Launch Statement of 21 July 2022, and the Provisional Outline of Scope for Module 3 dated 8 November 2022, that it would examine the healthcare consequences of how the governments responded to the pandemic with regard to primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare sectors.
Any ordinary interpretation would suggest that “healthcare” included dental health services.
By an application dated 4 December 2022, the Dental Alliance sought to be made a Core Participant in the Inquiry for Module 3.
In a provisional notice of determination dated 12 January 2023, the Chair said that: (1) it was accepted that the Dental Alliance had an interest in healthcare and in healthcare systems, but (2) the Dental Alliance did not have a significant interest in the “important aspect” of the matters of Module 3.
In a renewed application dated 19 January 2023, the Dental Alliance made further submissions demonstrating that it had a clear significant interest.
In a notice of determination dated 16 February 2023, the Chair concluded that dental healthcare systems were part of the healthcare systems of the UK, but it was not a significant aspect of Module 3.
The Dental Alliance is surprised by the changed position adopted by the Chair of the Inquiry. For reasons, which are clear, dental healthcare systems are very much a significant part of the healthcare systems of the UK and warrant specific consideration at the Inquiry. To fail to do so undermines the clinical and structural importance of dental healthcare systems.
The Dental Alliance seeks your support to draft a letter to the Chair to ask that dental healthcare systems are considered within the Inquiry in Module 3, and specifically that it should be part of a key focus, as it is an important part of primary, secondary and tertiary care.
