Participating in speech and debate has been a transformative experience for me. As someone who focuses on congressional debate, I've found immense joy and personal growth through this event. Unfortunately, despite its importance, congressional debate is not currently included in the Missouri State Speech and Debate tournament. This oversight means I, and many like me, miss out on the opportunity to engage fully in the state competition.

Debating Congress offers unique learning opportunities that cultivate critical thinking, public speaking skills, and a deeper understanding of legislative processes. These skills are not only essential for personal development but also for fostering civic engagement and future leadership. Other forms of debate, such as policy or Lincoln-Douglas, have long held a place in the tournament, but the absence of congressional debate limits the experiences of students who choose this path.

The inclusion of congressional debate in the Missouri State Speech and Debate tournament would ensure a more inclusive, diverse, and representative competition, reflecting the broader spectrum of speech and debate activities enjoyed by students across our state. Many schools in Missouri actively participate in congressional debate at the local level, proving that there is already a strong interest and infrastructure to support this event.

I call on the Missouri State High School Activities Association to recognize the significance of congress debate and to include it in the upcoming state tournament. Doing so not only acknowledges the dedication of students like me but also champions the values of comprehensive education. Let's make a stand for fairness and inclusivity in academic competitions by giving congressional debate the platform it deserves.
