From a young age, I have faced the overwhelming daily battle against obesity. This personal struggle is not just a statistic—it is my lived reality. Obesity is a chronic disease, one that is often misunderstood and underestimated yet carries serious long-term health implications, from cardiovascular diseases to diabetes and mental health challenges. Despite effective treatments being available, the financial burden of accessing medications like Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Saxenda makes them an unattainable dream for many Romanians living with this condition.

In Romania, healthcare is considered a fundamental right for all of its citizens, a principle that should include equitable treatment for chronic conditions like obesity. Currently, the cost of these modern anti-obesity medications makes them inaccessible to many, particularly to those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who are disproportionately affected by obesity-related health issues. Access to these medications should be based on need, not financial ability.

Inclusion of these medications in Romania’s publicly reimbursed healthcare programs would not only align with principles of equity and fairness but also improve the overall health outcomes for thousands of individuals struggling with obesity. This would reduce associated health complications and, ultimately, lead to a healthier population and lower long-term healthcare costs for the nation.

Countries like the UK and Germany, which have integrated such medications into their healthcare systems, have witnessed marked improvements in public health outcomes and individual well-being. It is time for Romania to follow suit and prioritize the health of its citizens.

I urge the Romanian government, including the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance House, to include anti-obesity medications in the list of reimbursed treatments. This step will ensure that effective, life-changing treatments are accessible to those who need them, providing relief to those who live daily under the weight of this chronic disease.
