The Issue

I am a Type 2 diabetic, and I struggle every month trying to balance the cost of living with the costs associated with managing my diabetes. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems, essential to managing my condition, come at a staggering cost of approximately $100 every 10 to 14 days. Out-of-pocket expenses like these add an immense burden on individuals like myself who are not insulin-dependent but still need consistent monitoring.

Currently, the Ontario Trillium Drug Benefit only covers these life-saving devices for insulin-dependent diabetics. This exclusion leaves many, especially Type 2 diabetics, in difficult financial situations where we have to choose between proper health management and other essentials of living. It feels unjust that the Ontario government determines whose health needs are prioritized simply based on dependence on insulin.

According to Diabetes Canada, over 40% of people with diabetes are not insulin-dependent and yet they face similar risks and complications if their blood glucose levels are not properly managed. A report by the Canadian Diabetes Association highlights that CGMs can reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, proving them to be not only a medical necessity but a cost-effective tool for long-term management of diabetes in preventing acute complications.

It's time for the Ontario government to take action and expand the Trillium Drug Benefit to cover the cost of CGM systems for all diabetics. This change will ease the financial burden on thousands and allow individuals to manage their health effectively, reducing their risk of serious complications and improving their quality of life.
