After SLOCOG's unanimous vote April 3rd we hoped it would be a simple yes vote for the Consent Agenda Item 21 - for the County to send a letter of support to Caltrans to close this death trap. In the end it was.

Lynn Compton, District 4 Supervisor, voted as well (all questions of conflicts resolved) after making some positive comments including describing her friend Lesley Kearney, who taught her children how to ride horses, being severely hurt at El Campo in 2008. We should acknowledge with gratitude that this process just now completed started with Lynn - when she called a meeting for all stakeholders in October and started working and funding a path to solving this. So it was fitting that Lynn was able to speak about her support at the end, right before the vote. Thank you Lynn.

Suzie Smith spoke (hurt there 7 weeks before Jordan) and was really powerful and personal in speaking about El Campo's impact on her and also the loss of Jordan. Made me cry. I didn’t speak as thought it was not necessary. Afterwards we all hugged in the lobby and I did some interviews with PBS and KCOY.

Now Caltran's has what they asked for - consensus. We expect partial closure by Caltrans using temporary barriers and signs within the next few months, with permanent installs coming later. I will continue to monitor their progress and remind their engineers of the necessity for a safe right turn acceleration lane with guardrails beside the ravine, as well.

A big barbecue is planned for the first weekend the closure is in place and we will be back to take pictures, celebrate what Jordan meant to all of us, and be thankful that we could honor him in this way. So many lives will be saved and injuries/disabilities avoided through this change.

A good day. We love you Jordan.
