Improving Ramapo College’s Campus Safety

Improving Ramapo College’s Campus Safety

The Issue

October 13, 2022 at Ramapo College of New Jersey, 19 year old Ramapo student, Alexis Ruhlen, was kidnapped at knifepoint in the parking lots of Ramapo’s campus by fellow Ramapo student and boyfriend, by Pawel Sliwinski. She was forced to drive at knifepoint and beaten by Pawel, leaving her bruised and injured. This has shown that it is a danger that the parking lots on campus do not have safety features. There are no cameras recording the parking lots. In addition, the only accessible Emergency Blue Light Boxes are not relative to the parking lots, only on the campus itself. According to Ramapo’s Commuter Affairs, approximately 60% (3,000 out of 5,000) students commute to campus. This makes the parking lots, as well as walking to and from campus, vital parts of many students’ time at Ramapo. It is unacceptable that safety features like cameras and Emergency Blue Light Boxes are not found all over campus, including parking lots. Safety of all students should be a priority for the Ramapo College of New Jersey. With safety features added to parking lots, dangerous happenings could be prevented. Let Alexis’ story be heard and inspire others to speak out. Her experience will make a change and raise awareness for domestic violence and abuse. Please help by signing this petition to add safety features to ALL of Ramapo College’s campus including parking lots to ensure safety of all students, including commuters. With your signature, we can help protect the lives of students on Ramapo College’s campus.
