Improving Homeless Shelters Across New York City
The Issue
Welcome to our petition dedicated to improving the lives of the homeless in New York City! Our mission is simple yet profound: to revolutionize the conditions in NYC homeless shelters, creating spaces that prioritize dignity, empowerment, and holistic support for those in need. #NYCShelterRevolution
First off, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who is able to read this right now. We, a group of students in our global activism class, are trying to raise our voices as we search for a solution to homelessness. The biggest social issue facing society now is not an easy one. We want to help end homelessness, but we also want to encourage more support for those who are homeless. For example, many people with mental or physical disabilities, Latinos, African-Americans, LGBTQ+ people, and others make up the homeless communities. In the end, since the numbers are rising, we should all be worried about the issue of homelessness.
At the moment the city is focusing on expanding the number of shelters encompassing New York and targeting all communities to have their ‘Fair Share’ of homeless shelters. Although his goal has good intentions to make sure every homeless person has a place to sleep off the streets, it fails to target the issue of why the homeless are on the streets to begin with. Many homeless people face mental and physical health challenges and do not get the aid they need. Additionally, homeless shelters are an unsafe environment. Our tax money should be sent on improving the homeless shelters we already have instead of adding more that no one inhabits.
We believe that every person deserves a safe, clean, and nurturing environment, which is why we're advocating for the enhancement of shelter conditions. Our vision includes the incorporation of vital resources for mental and physical well-being, ensuring access to better food, clothing, housing, security, and more. By addressing the issues of homelessness and offering comprehensive support, we aim to help our fellow New Yorkers regain their independence and rebuild their lives.
If the issue is not being taken into consideration, a lot of homeless people will continue to die. Many people who are experiencing homelessness will continue to struggle, homeless people will continue to experience mental health. Overall, if we fail to address homelessness this figure will reach 392,000 by 2041. Termed as core homelessness, this includes rough sleeping, sofa surfing, squatting, people living in hostels and unsuitable forms of temporary accommodation as well as people forced to sleep in cars, tents and night shelters.
The reality is that everybody has the ability to make a difference; we are stronger together. Join us in his transformative journey as homeless people's homeless shelters are a beacon of challenge, science, and opportunity. Together, we can uplift homeless unity and create a brighter future for all. #NYCShelterRevolution
