As a small community in East Kootenay, BC, we are personally affected by the neglect of Highway 43 during winter. Many of us travel this road daily - friends, family members, co-workers - and it is heartbreaking to witness the consistent trend of annual fatalities due to poor maintenance. The use of brine by Mainroads has proven ineffective in ensuring our safety during harsh winter conditions. This stretch of road should not be classified as low priority; our lives depend on it.

It's time we demand better from those responsible for maintaining our roads. We call for an end to the use of brine and a comprehensive review into safer alternatives for de-icing roads in cold weather conditions. We also urge that more resources be allocated towards making Highway 43 safe again.
