The Issue

Raised in McKenzie, I have always found Highway 55 to be a part of my life: a route travelled often and a place housing many collective memories. However, it is deeply disheartening that this highway has been the site of numerous tragic accidents over the years. From my best friend's sister to toddlers and teenagers, the loss of life is immeasurable and irreplaceable. The recent fatalities of a young child and weeks before a vacationing parent are stark reminders of the urgent action we need to take.

The dangers posed by Highway 55 are not just statistics but realities lived by people in our community each day. I believe we can make significant improvements by implementing practical safety measures. To this end, our demand is twofold: Firstly, we require at least one red traffic light at all town entrances along Highway 55. This would include locations like Red Level, McKenzie, and Georgiana among others. This can ease the flow of traffic, giving safer entry and exit to these towns.

Secondly, we need safe turning lanes on both sides of Highway 55 at every entry point or turn. These provisions can eliminate the need for sudden, abrupt turns that jeopardize the safety of other road users.

In addition to these physical changes, increased police surveillance can ensure that travelers maintain the speed limit, contributing to the overall safety of those using this highway. The safety of our community members should never be compromised. Let's make Highway 55 a safer route to travel. Encourage the counties associated with this highway to prioritize these necessary alterations.
I am adding to my petition what others have requested, we want the driveway in front of the Shell, formally the Gitty up and Go to be closed off! All who arrive at the store must enter and exit using Gorum Bridge road aka CR 35.

Please sign this petition if you believe in making Highway 55 a safer road for all who use it.
