Improve the Prescription Process for Life-saving Medications by GP Surgeries

The Issue

I am a patient, suffering from a condition that requires ongoing treatment, one of countless others who also share this struggle. Our battle lies not only with our health but also with securing our basic needs: specified life-saving medication on our repeat prescriptions. The current protocol in place within GP surgeries to wait for a clinical letter instead of adding such crucial medication on receipt of the hospital copy, where it is clearly indicated for the GP to continue, puts the health of countless patients at significant risk.

This process is not only physically but emotionally draining due to the drawn-out waiting period, which in itself can have severe health correlates. Furthermore, GP surgeries often decline necessary items like shower protection patches for patients with tunnel lines for dialysis. The provision of protective injections by GPs is also frequently refused. This is not healthcare, and this is not a system that prioritizes patients. We look to our health services to care for us, to aid us when we are most vulnerable, not put us further at risk.

It is estimated that over 15 million people in England live with a long-term health condition (Source: Public Health England), often relying on multiple medications for daily freedom and survival. These patients stand to benefit from a revised system enabling quicker access to their specific drugs. Any delay, any red tape is not only an inconvenience but is a matter of life and death. Changes in prescription protocols and necessary item provision can massively improve the quality of life of countless citizens.

Join us in taking a stand, and sign this petition to call on healthcare officials to revise the current prescription process within GP surgeries, to facilitate timely access to life-saving medications, essential protective items and injections. Your signature can mark the difference in the quality of healthcare provided to all. Sign today for a better tomorrow.
