This is a petition to improve School Zone crosswalk visibility at Manville Road and Academy Street in Pleasantville, NY.  This is the intersection at BRS Elementary, where children cross Manville Rd. to walk up the stairs at Academy St. to get to and from school. 

We request the installation of flashing traffic beacon lights over the crosswalk to alert drivers to the school pedestrian crosswalk.  The flashing beacon light would be hung over the intersection and flash yellow in Manville direction and red in Academy direction, during School Zone hours (7am-6pm school days).  This would improve visibility of the intersection, encourage drivers to slow down and support the hard work our crossing guard is doing to help children cross safely during arrivals and dismissals.

Pleasantville school district is a walking district (no school buses) and many children and parents walk and use this crosswalk to get to and from school.  Drivers who are using Manville to get through Pleasantville to other destinations often speed through this crosswalk, even cutting around cars with parents driving waiting to turn onto Academy to drop their children off by car.  A beacon over the intersection would alert drivers to slow down for children getting to and from school and would also improve safety for everyone using this road.  As traffic in the village continues to increase, additional safety measures are needed and installing a beacon will help make this intersection be safer during school hours.
