Improve safety on the road! Raise railings of the Buckman Bridge Jacksonville
The Issue
The Henry Holland Buckman Bridge carries I-295 West Beltway traffic over the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida.
The bridge is of beam-type construction, approximately 3.1 miles (5.0 km) in length, and travels roughly east–west. The eastbound (carrying I-295 South traffic) and westbound (carrying I-295 North traffic) lanes are built on separate bridge structures.
Jacksonville's Buckman Bridge handles an average 125,500 vehicles a day, according to North Florida Transportation Planning Organization estimates.
Many accidents happen on this bridge with some vehicles even going overboard into the water which is about 65ft deep. As accidents are caused by reckless driving the rails on the bridge could help cars not to go into the water and possibly save more lives than lost. Recently on 2/28 a 61 year old male was struck and his truck went over the bridge were it took hours and hours before his body and car were discovered. Few years back I remember a mom and her kids.. so tragic.
The bridge is not safe here in Jacksonville and we need to do something about it. How many more lives will be risked??
