I am heartbroken to share that I recently lost my youngest child, a vibrant and promising 21-year-old, due to the carelessness of a box truck driver at the intersection of Lamont and Grand. This tragic and unnecessary loss has fueled a determination in me to ensure no other family endures such a heartache due to the dangerous conditions of this crossroads.

The intersection of Lamont and Grand has been a notorious hotspot for accidents, many resulting in severe injuries and, tragically, loss of life. The current road design, particularly the open turn, creates confusion and invites reckless driving. Drivers often misjudge oncoming traffic, a problem exacerbated by heavy vehicles like box trucks whose operators fail to pay adequate attention.

Statistics indicate a worrying pattern of incidents at this junction, with local law enforcement records highlighting a significantly higher number of accidents, some tragically fatal, compared to other intersections in our community. The risk posed not only to drivers but to pedestrians and cyclists as well cannot be ignored any longer.

A feasible and immediate solution is to close off this hazardous turn lane, an action that will force drivers to make safer maneuvers. Alongside this, implementing better signage and improved traffic light systems can drastically enhance the safety of this area. Similar interventions in other neighborhoods have shown a marked decrease in accident rates and an increase in public safety.

Time is of the essence to prevent further tragedies. We owe it to our loved ones, to our community, and to every passerby who uses this intersection. I urge city planners and policymakers to take immediate action before another life is claimed.
