VICTORY! 🎉
As we enter another school year, I think it’s finally time to declare victory on our petition for a safer crossing at 6th Avenue & 2nd Street.
More than 2,100 people added their voices. Our concerns led to a detailed road-safety study, and that study confirmed many of the issues families had been raising all along. Temporary safety improvements are now on the ground, with significant permanent upgrades planned for 2027.
This took a community. A special thank you to the early champions who brought forward and supported the motion calling for a review: Daniel Fontaine, Tasha Henderson, Danielle Connelly, Kathleen Carlsen, and Paul Minhas.
The New Westminster School Board later added its support, and ultimately the full City Council voted to move the work forward, including funding for the safety improvements recommended through the independent review of the intersection.
Most of all, thank you to every parent, neighbour, student and community member who signed, wrote, spoke up and kept going.
We asked for a safer crossing for our kids. And, well… we won. 💛
