Improve road safety on Penylan Road, Argoed.
The Issue
I live on Penylan Road, Argoed, where my partner Layton Jones was injured due to a road safety issue that plagues our area. The incident occurred when a Braces Bread lorry, speeding over the brow of the hill, collided with our car door. This terrifying event has left not only emotional scars but also a strong desire to improve road safety in our community to prevent such tragedies from happening again. And it's the what ifs. What if this was a young child? Or an older, more vulnerable person?
Our street has become a danger zone for residents and visitors alike over the past 10 years at least, evidenced by speaking with residents and hearing their stories, as speeding vehicles recklessly navigate the brow of the hill in particular.
These conditions are aggravated not only by the gradient of the street but also by the absence of appropriate traffic calming measures. It is imperative to act before another accident occurs. In fact, too many incidents have occurred and the council are still not listening to us. Enough is enough, something needs to be done. Finances may be an issue, but road safety needs to be prioritised.
Statistics show that speeding is a contributing factor in approximately 30% of all road traffic fatalities in the UK (source: Department for Transport). This figure highlights the pressing need for effective intervention. Our street requires immediate measures such as speed bumps, better signage, and increased enforcement of existing speed limits to safeguard all who use it.
In addition, the installation of speed cameras and regular traffic patrols will deter reckless driving and help protect the lives of our community members, including children and elderly residents. Similar measures in other areas have effectively reduced speed-related incidents, contributing to safer neighborhoods.
We call upon our local council and road safety authorities to assess the situation and implement these crucial changes. Only by prioritizing road safety can we ensure that no other family has to endure the trauma that we experienced.
Please sign this petition to demand immediate action to improve road safety on our street. Together, we can make our community a safer place for everyone.
