The Issue

On 21 July 2024, a heart-wrenching tragedy struck the A436 at Ullenwood, Gloucestershire, when four young men lost their lives in a devastating road traffic collision. As family members of the victims, even though we reside in Romania, our ties to this place are cemented by this profound loss. We are compelled to raise our voices, not only out of grief but out of a sense of duty to prevent other families from enduring such unimaginable pain. This petition calls for immediate and comprehensive road safety improvements on this perilous stretch of road.

The A436 is infamous for its winding lanes, poor visibility, and inadequate signage, making it a frequent site of accidents. According to the Gloucestershire County Council's statistics, there have been over 200 reported incidents on this road in the past decade, with a noticeable spike in serious accidents over the past three years. Despite community efforts and numerous requests for better road management, little has been done.

Our proposal for improving safety includes better street lighting, installation of speed cameras, improved road signage, and regular maintenance checks. Enhanced road markings and setting up barriers at critical points can greatly reduce the risk of fatal accidents. Moreover, organizing community awareness programs focusing on road safety could foster safer driving practices among the public.

This loss should be a turning point for policymakers to recognize the urgent need for infrastructural changes. The devastating incident shouldn’t be just another statistic; it should be a catalyst for bringing about meaningful transformations.

By signing this petition, you are urging the Gloucestershire County Council and related road safety authorities to take immediate action. Let us make the A436 safer for everyone who travels on it, ensuring no other family has to endure the suffering that ours has. Please stand with us to demand these essential safety measures. Please sign this petition to initiate these necessary changes and save lives. Together, we can make a difference.
