The Issue

This petition urgently calls on Leeds City Council to implement a 20 mph speed limit and speed bumps on Bramhope Old Lane at The Chevin to protect vulnerable road users from increasingly dangerous speeding traffic, highlighted by a recent serious injury to a horse rider. Bramhope Old Lane, Otley LS21 3DB. What3Words ///recapture.regulator.struck

Bramhope Old Lane, at the top of The Chevin, is a small, country road vital for accessing the beautiful Chevin park. It's used by many: cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers, runners, park runners, and walkers.

Recently, this road has become a busy cut-through for drivers. The new road surface encourages dangerously fast driving, making it incredibly unsafe for anyone not in a car. The bends are blind, and the road is narrow, yet cars speed and overtake recklessly. Drivers often verbally abuse cyclists and horse riders, showing no respect for other road users. Even those parking to walk their dogs are at risk of their animals being hit.

This year has seen a worrying rise in near misses and accidents. Just recently, a horse rider is in A&E because a car drove too close and fast to her horse, causing it to spook and throw her off, cracking her helmet. The driver didn't even stop to help, despite the clear damage caused.

This isn't just about close calls anymore; people are getting hurt. The fast traffic on this road now prevents cyclists, horse riders, walkers, and runners from safely reaching The Chevin using this route. We need to make it safe for everyone to enjoy the park.

We urgently ask Leeds City Council and the relevant road safety authorities to make Bramhope Old Lane at The Chevin safe for all by:

  • Implementing a 20 mph speed limit. This will give drivers more time to see vulnerable road users and reduce the severity of crashes.
  • Installing speed bumps. These will physically slow down speeding vehicles.
  • We also call on our local MP and Councillors to support this vital campaign.

We need to make Bramhope Old Lane safe for everyone – cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers, runners, park runners, and walkers.

Please sign this petition to help prevent further injuries or fatalities of both people and animals!
