Improve Road Layout in Ilkeston To Reduce Congestion

The Issue

As a fellow resident of Ilkeston, I understand the frustration many of us face daily at the White Lion Square Roundabout, Station Road and Rutland Street Roundabout between Tesco & Aldi.

The frequent misuse of Lane 1 on Chalons Way, where drivers bypass queues and dangerously merge onto Stanton Road, poses a serious safety risk and causes unnecessary delays for responsible drivers. The two lower roundabouts often have queues blocking vehicles that are not joining the main flow of traffic, increasing unneeded wait times and traffic quantity.

We are calling for simple improvements at key points in our local road network to get Ilkeston moving more safely and efficiently, including:

1. Chalons Way (Lane 1 Misuse): Action to prevent inappropriate use of Lane 1, by making signs and road markings more visible, which currently leads to traffic using the wrong lane to exit on Stanton Road.

2. Derby Road Entrance: Lacks clear road signs and road markings, particularly affecting traffic heading toward Nottingham Road where road users also use the incorrect lanes frequently to exit the roundabout.

3. Stanton Road Exit, White Lion Square Roundabout: Extending or implementing a minimum time delay between sequences at the pedestrian crossing to improve flow and reduce bottlenecks.

4. Nottingham Road Entrance, White Lion Square Roundabout: Installing a yellow box junction would help decrease long queues as a result of vehicles blocking the entrance due to the pedestrian crossings regular sequences. Queues are often at least 10minites, increasing to more than 20 minutes on busier days.

5. Park Road Entrance, White Lion Square Island: A second box to help traffic entering from Park Road, who face challenges entering the island. The pedestrian crossing is poorly placed, and causes traffic to stop on the island. At rush hour, the constant flow of traffic from Chalons Way and A609 creates long delays entering the island.

Secondly:

6. Station Road - Chalons Way Roundabout: A yellow box would help prevent blockages for those exiting the town centre and Albion Centre car parks toward Station Road/Chalons Way.

7. Manners Road Exit (next to Aldi): A yellow box, or, part time traffic lights here would better control the flow of traffic from Manners Road and exiting traffic from the island onto Heanor Road (exiting vehicles don't create enough gaps, preventing Manners Road entering for any direction.

We’re asking Erewash Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council alongside Derbyshire Highways, to address these critical issues which have been left for years without improvement, for a safer, more efficient, and less stressful road system (to minimise Road Rage and potential accidents). These concerns have been raised by residents for years, albeit informally, as evidenced on local "Spotted" groups on Facebook. But now we need real action.

By signing this petition, you are helping to improve our roads, reduce frustration, and make Ilkeston a safer place for everyone. Together, we can make a difference—add your voice to the call for change today.

Thank you.
