According to Stats Canada's recent study, 6 out of 10 of the WORST/MOST DANGEROUS cities in CANADA, are in BC.

I moved to Chilliwack 15 years ago. Back then, our streets were safe. Today, things have taken a tragic turn. On my block alone, in proximity to a secondary school, landlords of two houses allowed tenants who transformed the houses into crack dens. I personally documented over 160 individuals visiting the same location within a span of just 10 hours. We've endured prostitutes on our streets, drug trafficking, fires, and even vehicle explosions. Our local MLA and RCMP fINALLY took action and cleaned up - but at what cost? Chilliwack now stands second in Canada in terms of highest crime rates.

Things need to change. We can't live under these circumstances. That's why I implore you to support this petition calling on your Mayor and your city council, our local MLA's, MP, and the Premier of our Province to revamp our public safety measures. More efficient use of our first responders should be enacted urgently. We must also focus on the justice process to keep chronic offenders off our streets. 

While recurring criminal activity is a symptom of a system that fails to deter offenders, we need to change our laws to ensure there is no longer a Catch & Release option. The punishment must fit the crime, keeping criminals in jail for necessary periods to help discourage repeated offenses. There is ample evidence to suggest that sterner penalties can have a deterrence effect on crime. For Chilliwack, and many other communities like it, appropriate sentencing could contribute significantly to dissuading repeat offenses.
