Dear Resident,
I wanted to provide you with an update following the petition you signed calling for improved pedestrian safety beside the Eurospar on the Saintfield Road in Carryduff.
On Monday, Kate Nicholl MLA presented the petition in the Assembly on behalf of residents and road users who have raised serious concerns about safety along this stretch of road.
-Kate Nicholl’s speech in the Assembly
The petition received strong cross-party support, reflecting the fact that this is a practical and urgent road safety issue affecting people who use the area every day – including parents, older residents, young people, shoppers and those accessing nearby services.
I want to sincerely thank everyone who signed the petition and took the time to raise their concerns. Your support has helped ensure this issue is being taken seriously.
The petition has now been formally referred to the Assembly’s Infrastructure Committee and to the Minister for Infrastructure for consideration.
Following this, we also met officials from the Department for Infrastructure on site outside the Eurospar on the Saintfield Road. During this meeting we highlighted the need for a pedestrian crossing and improved street lighting in the area.
The Department confirmed that this location is currently number 11 on its prioritised list for potential pedestrian crossings. Officials also advised that they will review the street lighting along this stretch of road to ensure it is adequately lit for both road users and pedestrians. In addition, the Department has committed to reviewing speed limits across the Carryduff area.
I will continue to keep you updated as this work progresses.
Thank you again for supporting the petition and helping ensure the concerns of the Carryduff community are heard.
Kind regards,
Jamie Harpur
