Petition updateImprove Pedestrian Safety on 2nd StreetUpdate on City Hearing and Progress

Hi neighbors and supporters,

I attended the public hearing tonight hoping to speak about this issue. But I misunderstood it and screwed up. The hearing was limited to two specific bylaws, not general concerns, so I wasn’t able to speak. That one is on me. It was my first time attending a hearing like this.

That said, there's actually some exciting progress. Councillor Nadine Nakagawa kindly replied to my earlier email and expressed concern about the incident at 2nd Street and 3rd Avenue. She said she will check in with the engineering department about that intersection, which I truly appreciate.

But this issue goes beyond a single intersection. What we’re asking for is a review of pedestrian safety along the entire length of 2nd Street, including all intersections up to the Herbert Spencer Elementary school zone. That school zone saw meaningful improvements following a 2024 petition, and it shows that change is possible when issues are reviewed as a whole.

Possible measures worth studying include a lower speed limit of 30 km/h, clearer and more visible crosswalk markings, warning signage, better lighting, and other traffic-calming approaches. These would improve everyday pedestrian safety and also create a safer transition into the school zone.

We are waiting to hear back from Councillor Nakagawa and other City decision makers on next steps.

If you haven’t reached out to the City yet, now is a good time. Individual emails and calls matter. The more residents speak up, the stronger the case is for action.

Thank you for your support and for helping keep this moving.
