The Issue

In the Fall of 2025, there were 51,838 enrolled students at MSU. 59% of those students live off-campus but there is only one parking lot that students can purchase permits for. Off-campus students have three choices for parking: pay hourly for a parking spot at visitor lots on campus, purchase a permit to park in Lot 89 and take the CATA bus #32 to get on campus, or park in Lot 89 and walk 1+ miles to campus.

However, if students have night classes (as 10k do each semester), the options for off-campus students become less accessible and safe. Students either have to pay for parking, pay extra for the bus to the Commuter Lot 89 after 7:15pm, or risk walking 1+ miles from campus to the Commuter Lot 89.

MSU Parking Advocates is a student-driven social action campaign, working to persuade the university to enact these changes:

1) Make on campus parking free from 5pm-10pm Monday-Friday to better accommodate the needs of commuter students with evening classes.

2) Make after hours transportation to/from campus and the commuter lot 89 safer and more accessible by making CATA lot link bus services free for any student with a parking permit for this lot.

3) Make the route that MSU evening students typically walk from campus to commuter lot 89 safer by adding 2 safety call light boxes along Farm Lane, for a one-time cost of $15,000 and an annual cost of $400.
