Improve Housing Conditions for Disabled Individuals Living in Council Housing

Improve Housing Conditions for Disabled Individuals Living in Council Housing
The Issue
I write this petition not only as an advocate for better housing conditions, but also as the daughter of a disabled woman who has been neglected by the existing system. My mother has suffered in a ground floor flat fraught with disrepair for over thirteen years. Her dwelling is anything but home: black mould extends across walls, the brickwork is sodden, and plasterwork has fallen away due to recurrent leaks in the building.
A severe blockage in the toilet system led to an unspeakable horror: sewage backing up into her flat and ruining everything. The inner walls are now damp; the ceiling overhead is on the brink of collapse. Her bathroom, intended to be a wet room, is infected with pervasive black mould.
But the problems don't end here. The building's outer walls exhibit a massive crack, running across the concrete staircase for the flats above. Guttering overflows at entrances create stagnating pools of water, further contributing to the mould and damp inside.
Many disabled individuals like my mother are trapped in similar unspeakable conditions, forgotten by those meant to care for their welfare. The lack of appropriate, humane housing for disabled people, particularly within council housing, isn't a localised issue - it's a systemic failure. This needs immediate action. The health and dignity of these individuals hang in the balance.
The government and housing councils have a responsibility to provide suitable living environments for disabled people. I call for an immediate review and prompt remediation for such untenable housing conditions. Together we can voice our concern and insist on much-needed change. Sign this petition to demand better living conditions for disabled people enduring inadequate council housing.
