Improve Crosswalk Safety in Hingham, MA

Improve Crosswalk Safety in Hingham, MA
The Issue
What was supposed to be a date night with my husband, turned near tragedy when he was nearly hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk at Main Street and Winter street Hingham, MA on a lovely summer evening (6/7/25, 8:45pm). A terrifying moment that no pedestrian should ever have to face.
This near-tragic event highlights a pressing need for enhanced pedestrian safety measures in our town. All too often, drivers fail to notice crosswalks, posing a dangerous threat to pedestrians who rely on these designated areas for safe passage across our busy streets. The most unfortunate part is that our town refuses to implement these basic safety changes, even when citizens have been highlighting this issue for years. Someone will get seriously hurt if the officials don’t respond accordingly and act fast.
We call for the immediate implementation of three basic critical safety measures at all crosswalks in Hingham. First, the installation of flashing lights to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians. These beacons are highly effective in increasing crosswalk visibility, especially during nighttime or in inclement weather conditions. Second, we propose the installation of speed bumps near high foot traffic areas, which will significantly reduce vehicle speed, thus decreasing the likelihood of accidents. Finally, it is essential that all crosswalks be repainted annually. A fresh coat of paint ensures high visibility, reminding both drivers and pedestrians of the crosswalk's presence and importance.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that pedestrian fatalities have increased by 53% over the past decade, with many of these accidents occurring in areas where safety measures are inadequate. Our proposed changes are not only vital but also achievable. Other towns have seen a reduction in pedestrian accidents after implementing similar measures.
Making these improvements will not only enhance safety for pedestrians like my husband but also foster a community where everyone can feel safe walking our streets. We urge the Hingham town council to take these necessary steps to protect its residents. Sign this petition to demand action and help prevent another potentially tragic accident.
