Improve Brentwood School Breakfasts for Teen Health

The Issue

I eat school breakfast every day, and it's always disappointing to see just cinnamon rolls or mini pancakes being offered in a plastic bag. It’s time for schools to offer better alternatives for breakfast. For many students in Brentwood, school breakfast is the first meal of the day, or even their only chance to eat before lunch. Providing them with highly processed foods stacked with tons of sugar isn’t setting them up for success. Studies from reputable sources like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that a nutritious breakfast is crucial for adolescent development and cognitive function. When teenagers consume a balanced meal in the morning, they are more focused and perform better academically.

Current options barely qualify of what a nourishing breakfast should be. High sugar content and lack of nutrients can lead to energy crashes and poor concentration in class, adversely affecting students' ability to learn and grow. Our children deserve better.
We propose implementing healthier breakfast options in Brentwood schools, including whole grains, low-fat dairy, and protein-rich foods that will fuel students through the morning, such as protein bars, fruits, parfaits, and healthier cereals like Life or Cheerios, or possibly even hot foods like oatmeal, and eggs on wheat bread. Integrating these options can foster better eating habits and contribute positively to students' academic performance and overall well-being.
With community support, we can encourage local school boards to prioritize students' health by revamping breakfast menus. Sign this petition to urge Brentwood schools to make a change. Let’s ensure our children and teenagers have access to healthier, more filling breakfasts that support their growth and learning potential. Make your voice heard and support a brighter future for our students. Sign now!
