The Issue

Power Take Off (PTO) guards are essential safety devices that protect farmers and workers from serious injuries caused by rotating PTO shafts. However, the design and quality of PTO guards has not improved in recent years and are easily damaged leading to inconsistent protection for users. Additionally, the prices of PTO guards are often unreasonably high, making it difficult for small-scale farmers to afford them.

According to a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), there were 2,027 agricultural worker deaths in the United States between 2003 and 2011. Of these deaths, 23% were caused by contact with objects or equipment such as PTO shafts.  Every year farmers and farm workers suffer injury and death in the UK from accidents involving PTOs. This highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures in agriculture.

It is unacceptable that farmers have to choose between their safety and their financial well-being. The cost of a good quality PTO guard should not be prohibitive for small-scale farmers who cannot afford expensive equipment.

Therefore, we call on manufacturers of PTO guards to standardize their designs so that they provide consistent protection across all models. We also urge them to set reasonable prices that reflect the actual cost of production rather than exploiting consumers who have no other options.

By signing this petition, you will help us send a message to manufacturers that we demand safer working conditions for our farmers and workers at an affordable price.
