Greedy honey corporations and supermarkets are risking Australia’s future by allowing cheap and diseased honey from China and New Zealand to be sold at Australian supermarkets.
Please avoid all imported honey including homebrand honeys and Cloverdale honey. Do not feed honey to birds or animals out in the open as that honey could be foraged by other honeybees and spread disease.
Now Australia has varroamite there is an opportunity and urgent need to stop Imported Honey so we avoid the Threat of Deformed Wing Virus.
Deformed Wing Virus (DWV) poses a severe threat to honeybee populations worldwide, contributing to the decline of these pollinators.
DWV, primarily transmitted through Varroa mites, has been identified as a major factor in honeybee colony collapse. The virus weakens bees, causing deformities and impairing their ability to fly, gather food, and contribute to the hive. Varroa mites are notorious carriers of DWV, and their recent presence has facilitated the rapid spread of the virus. Beekeeping practices and the movement of honeybee products, including honey, can inadvertently contribute to the dissemination of DWV.
At the moment our bees are coping well with Varroa but once viruses like deformed wing virus appears we will experience huge collapses.
