Implement the Tim Tebow Law in New York State to Allow Homeschooled Children to Participate in School Sports
The Issue
My child, a 13-year-old who has recently started homeschooling, has been informed that he can no longer participate in school sports. This is a heartbreaking situation not just for my family, but for many others across NY. The joy and benefits of participating in school sports should not be exclusive to children attending traditional schools.
The 'Tim Tebow law', named after the famed athlete who was homeschooled yet allowed to play football at his local high school, is already implemented in 34 states across America. It allows homeschooled students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities at public schools. Unfortunately, New York State is currently not one of these states.
According to a study by Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine (2017), participation in team sports during adolescence can lead to better mental health outcomes as adults. Denying our children this opportunity could have long-term effects on their well-being.
We urge lawmakers and educational authorities of New York State to pass the 'Tim Tebow law' allowing homeschooled children like my son the chance they deserve - access and inclusion into school sports programs. Please sign this petition if you believe all children should have equal opportunities regardless of their schooling choice.
