Implement Student Concessions for AC Trains

The Issue

As daily commuters, we have observed a deeply concerning situation unfold on our railway lines. AC local trains, which were introduced to provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience, are running nearly empty. The reason? Their high ticket prices make them inaccessible to the vast majority of commuters. On the other hand, regular non-AC trains are carrying more than twice their intended capacity, with people packed in like sardines, clinging to safety rails, and spilling out of compartments. This situation isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s unsafe and unsustainable.

This glaring imbalance needs immediate attention. While AC locals were meant to ease the burden on our crowded railway system, they’ve become a missed opportunity because of their prohibitive fares. Meanwhile, the overcrowding in regular trains poses serious risks to the safety, health, and well-being of millions of daily commuters.

Our solution is simple but transformative: we call upon the railway authorities (IRCTC) to implement fare concessions for students on AC locals. Offering discounted fares to students would not only provide much-needed relief for those pursuing education but also help redistribute passenger loads, making daily travel safer and more efficient for everyone.

Consider this: a recent survey by the Times of India revealed that approximately 7.5 million people commute daily by train in Mumbai alone. A significant portion of these commuters are students who travel long distances to their schools, colleges, and universities. If even a fraction of these young passengers could switch to AC locals, it would significantly reduce the strain on non-AC trains.

The benefits of such a change are multifold. First, it would make education more accessible by reducing travel costs for students. Second, it would improve the safety and comfort of daily travel for all passengers, as reduced overcrowding would lower the risk of accidents and health hazards. Third, it would ensure better utilization of the AC local trains, which currently run under capacity, turning them into a more viable and sustainable service.

This is not just a matter of convenience—it’s a matter of equity, safety, and smarter resource management. Overcrowded trains are more than an inconvenience; they are a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Addressing this issue now could prevent larger crises in the future.

We urge all concerned citizens to join us in this cause. Sign our petition to request the introduction of student concessions on AC local trains. Let’s work together to create a railway system that is safer, more balanced, and accessible to everyone.

Affordable travel is not a luxury; it is a necessity, especially for students striving to build their futures. Let’s make this change happen—for them, for us, and for a better tomorrow.
