Speaking from my own experience as a mother, I can say that the state of group chats on social media platforms is a cause for worry for parents everywhere. My own teenagers, like so many others, have been exposed to harmful messages, heated arguments, and unwelcome online drama within these supposedly safe digital spaces. This situation is exacerbated when they are persistently re-added to these groups even after making the conscious decision to leave.

Existing regulations seem to fall short of effectively protecting our children from the dangers of uncontrolled interaction in these group chats. According to the Pew Research Center, 81% of parents report that their teenagers were regularly exposed to inappropriate content on social media. Given the sensitive nature and ongoing development of teenage mindsets, such exposure can have severe adverse impacts.

It is therefore critical that stricter protections are put in place. We must urge social media platforms to implement more stringent measures to prevent unmonitored content from being shared in these group chats. Enhanced controls for evaluating age-appropriate content and the persistent addition of users after leaving a chat should also be included.

We are not proposing the elimination of these chat groups - we understand they have their benefits. Rather, we are advocating for a safer digital environment where our children can grow and interact without being exposed to harmful elements. We owe it to our children to ensure that they are protected.
