On October 28, 2023, a life was tragically lost due to inadequate road safety measures. Angel McKnight, a vibrant young woman of just 23 years old, was swept off the unlit and unmarked Road 1390 in Scurry during a flash flood. Her car submerged in water led to her untimely death. This tragedy has forever changed our lives and we don't want any other family to experience this heartbreak.

Road 1390 is a newly constructed road that lacks basic safety features such as lights, signs or guardrails. It poses an extreme danger to all who travel on it especially during adverse weather conditions like flash floods which are not uncommon for Texas (NOAA). The lack of visibility and warning signs can easily lead drivers astray with fatal consequences.

We call upon the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to take immediate action in implementing necessary safety measures on Road 1390. By installing adequate lighting systems, clear signage and protective guardrails we can prevent further tragedies from occurring.

The loss of Angel McKnight, who was a sister, daughter, mother, and friend, is one too many. We urge TxDOT not only for the memory of Angel but also for the future safety of all who use this road - residents and visitors alike - to act now before another life is needlessly lost.
