NE 33rd Street Safety Update: Progress! 🎉

Hi everyone!

Surprised to see us in your inbox again? Well, the good fight marches on for the battle to slow folks down on NE 33rd. It's only taken us a year 😅  but I am thrilled to share that there is good news to report and progress has been made.

This summer PBOT added a second crossing to the NE Bryce and 33rd crossing so that both sides of the street now offer clear markings for safer passage. 🚸They added an additional sign as well.

And on this very morning, they finally added the promised crosswalk at NE Shaver! 🎉 This is a BIG win, and I am MOST grateful that they listened and made it happen. I hope it helps us all feel safer getting from one side of the street to the other.

Additionally, in response to some pleasant and persistent pestering, PBOT has shared that they've "made some adjustments and temporary speed reader signs should be installed before the end of the year for a period of six months" along this stretch of NE 33rd, between Fremont and Shaver.

So what about areas where we're still charting towards improvement?

In their most recent update to me last month, PBOT shared:

"As part of Transportation System Plan update, there is ongoing discussion with Portland Fire about street classifications. Currently, due to the classification of NE 33rd, speed bumps/cushions are still not an option."

  • With support from Councilor Pirtle-Guiney's staffers (THANK YOU Devin and Faisal!) I'm requesting a meeting with Portland Fire to discuss our options.

While there's still more work to be done, I am super grateful for the progress we've made and for the letters of support from both the Alameda Neighborhood Association and the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Association. A major thank you as well to all of the wonderful folks at PBOT who have continued to listen, collaborate, and put these much-needed improvements into action. I sincerely appreciate your partnership and support.

Wishing everyone a wonderful fall and upcoming holiday season! Thank you again for your support.
