I am a pensioner living in Lacombe, AB, Canada. Recently, my rent was increased by $450 because the building was purchased by an investor from Vancouver. They took advantage of the fact that Alberta has no rent cap and raised the rent exorbitantly. (Originally rent was increased by 750 but when they weren’t able to get renters at 1695 they brought it back down to 450) This is not only unfair but also causes undue hardship for many of us who have been living here for over 25 years.

Alberta's lack of rent control stands out among other provinces in Canada, most of which have implemented some form of rental price regulation to protect their residents from such drastic increases. The cost of living continues to rise due to changes in our country's economy and it is becoming increasingly difficult for people like me on fixed incomes to keep up. Our wages aren’t being raised either so people aren’t able to keep up with the increases of food n rent etc.

Furthermore, rental markets are scarce in Alberta making it even more challenging for those affected by such practices to find affordable alternatives. This situation is not unique to me; there are many Albertans facing similar hardships.

It's time we stand together and call on our provincial government to implement rent control regulations as a measure against these unreasonable increases and ensure fair treatment for all renters in Alberta.
