The Issue

As a single mother of two daughters in El Paso, I fear for our safety on the roads every day. Just last week, we lost a 17-year-old to a drunk driver who was only 18 years old. This is not an isolated incident but part of an alarming trend in our city. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in drunk driving incidents leading to numerous accidents and loss of innocent lives.

We cannot stand by while this happens. We need to take action now to prevent further tragedies. We propose that the city implement regular DUI checkpoints and have undercover agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission visit alcohol establishments daily. These measures will ensure that employees are not serving minors or intoxicated people, reducing the number of potential drunk drivers on our roads.

According to data from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), every day about 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes in the United States alone. In Texas, there were 1,438 deaths due to drunk driving accidents in 2019 - one death too many.

The implementation of these measures will help protect our community and ensure that no more innocent lives are lost due to someone's decision to drink and drive. It's time we made El Paso safer for everyone - especially for our children who deserve a chance at life beyond their early twenties.

Please sign this petition if you agree with us that it's time for change - because no one should have their life cut short by a preventable tragedy such as this.
