Implement Mandatory Seat Belts in Indian Buses

The Issue

As a neurosurgeon, I have all too often witnessed the tragic aftermath of bus accidents, seeing a disheartening number of avoidable injuries and needless loss of life. Even more heartbreaking is the life-long disability many survivors are subjected to as a terrible consequence of these accidents. Buses in India currently cruise at speeds of 90 to 100 kmph on newly constructed national highways, yet, unlike cars which are legally required to have seat belts, buses are not held to the same standard. This glaring safety blind spot has led to countless incidents where passengers are thrown into the front seats during an accident, with potentially fatal outcomes. Statistics show that, if worn correctly, seat belts can decrease the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45% and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50% (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S.). Introducing mandatory seat belts in buses could drastically reduce fatalities and injuries, saving countless lives while also reducing the burden on healthcare providers managing the aftermath of such incidents. The time to act is now: sign the petition to make seat belts compulsory in all Indian buses. Our endeavour could be the vital spark that ignites policy change and saves numerous lives.
