Mandatory Motorway Driving Training for All New UK License Holders

The Issue

As a long-time driver on the UK's motorways, I have witnessed the standard of driving reach an all-time low. Despite billions spent by the government on smart motorways and additional lanes, lane 1 often remains empty while lanes 2 and 3 are congested with middle lane drivers. This problem has been escalating over the years, culminating in a personal incident where a car swerved into lane 4 to avoid another undertaking after being held at 60mph for miles.

It is clear that there is an urgent need for mandatory training for motorway driving, particularly for new licence holders and newly settled foreign drivers. The lack of such training not only contributes to traffic congestion but also poses serious safety risks. According to Department for Transport statistics, in 2019 there were approximately 5,181 accidents on UK motorways resulting in serious injury or death - this figure could be reduced with better education and understanding of proper motorway use.

By implementing compulsory training we can ensure that all drivers understand how to correctly use each lane on our motorways, reducing congestion and improving overall road safety. It's time we took action to improve our roads - sign this petition today to call upon our government to introduce mandatory motorway driving training as part of obtaining a UK driver's licence.

We also request government educational campaigns to educate existing drivers of motorway overtaking laws.
